2014 Moments in Comics

To finish the 2014 nostalgia, here's my favourite comics & graphic novels from last year. I made it too late to contribute to Forbidden Planet's 'Best Of' articles where I was one of many featured last year, so here's a short summary of what stood out to me;

COMMANDO: Great War Stories by George Low & Keith Page, covers by Ian Kennedy

This year, I’ve eagerly followed D C Thomson’s longstanding title as it ambitiously embarked on a monthly tribute to the range of ordinary characters caught up in the extraordinary events of The Great War. The pocket sized Commando format is perfectly suited to these tales across the many theatres of war often highlighting lessor know combatants and conflicts. The stories are necessary stand-alone but, through cameos, contrast the idealistic enlistment dreams of a young newspaper boy with the experiences of those already at war. Although the tales are not the graphic accounts of a Charley’s War or a White Death (see below), they are no less effective in bringing the stories of ordinary soldiers to a wider newsstand audience and that should be praised. Expertly written and illustrated by George Low and Keith Page behind exceptional new Ian Kennedy covers these are well worth seeking out and hopefully will be collected on the series conclusion.

WHITE DEATH by Robbie Morrison and Charlie Adlard

Sticking with the First World War, this is the recent Image Comics re-release of the indie classic to tie in with the war’s centenary. Set in 1916 on the Italian Trentino mountain range it is unflinching in its portrayal of those soldiers caught up in the desperation of war. The futility of conflict is expertly played out through the eyes of a small group of Italian soldiers as their struggles with the enemy and their nihilist commander are dwarfed by the dangerous mountain terrain. The quieter moments really stand out with carefully chosen dialogue and images reflecting the horror of the soldiers experiences without being preachy. Not an easy read for sure but an important one, well deserving of its hardcover re-release from two of the UK’s leading talents.

MULP: Sceptre of the Sun #1 by Matt Gibbs and Sara Dunkerton

An absolute delight and a charming contrast to not only First World War stories but all other comics I’ve encountered this year. An anthropomorphic pulp adventure full of mice, mystery and exotic locations, what’s not to like! In the best adventure traditions, it’s rollicking fun with an Indiana Jones vibe as our heroes meet by an (alternative) Egyptian archaeological dig where their finds are under dangerous threat from spies working for a mysterious benefactor. Matt Gibbs clever and quick moving script allows Sara Dunkerton plenty of opportunity to show off her artistic skills with many dynamic locations and action scenes. As a fun first issue from two new creators this promises to be the start of something special.

Honourable mentions to Letty Wilson's delightful WEIRD MOOSE which I witnessed being created at Glasgow Comic-ConTop Shelf’s authentic American Civil Rights Movement book, MARCH, Jonathan Cape's SALLY HEATHCOTE: SUFFRAGETTE, Images Comics entertaining MANIFEST DESTINY and enjoyable indies BLACK FEATHER FALLS and HALF HANGED MacNAGHTEN from Soaring Penguin and Uproar Comics respectively.

New Shows! New Shows!

Well as you know us Accent UK guys don't get out very often (yeah right says Mrs M!) so we're pleased to confirm the final show schedule for the rest of this year!

Bryan Talbot's Lakes festival poster

First up for us is the very exciting The Lakes International Comic Art Festival on 19th and 20th of October, which is starting to gain momentum since first being announced ages ago, it has a stunning guest list with festival founders, Bryan and Mary Talbot, Sean Phillips, being joined by literally a who's who of great comic creators such as Charlie Adlard (fresh from his Copenhagen trip!), Steve Bell, Ed Brubaker, Kurt Busiek, Hunt Emerson, Duncan Fegredo, David Lloyd, Posy Simmonds and the one I'm most excited about, Joe Sacco!

A great line up plus dozens of invited indie creators including Accent UK, Garen Ewing, Ivan Petrus, Black Hearted Press, Jenika Ioffreda, Owen (Thaddeus Mist) Johnson, Scar Comics and many more in a special Comics Clock Tower market place right in the centre of Kendal.

It's aiming for that wonderful European feeling with the whole town of Kendal embracing the event so why not give it a go, it promises to be a very different comic experience.

Next up, the first Saturday in November  (appropriately the 2nd), will be our second trip of the year to  Comica's Comiket in London. The show will return to its latest venue at Central St Martins College, close to Kings Cross station where we had a record selling fun day way back in April, see my wee report here (scroll down!).

No guests have been announced yet but as you'll read from previous shows, there's usually no shortage of willing artists to 'drop-in', soak up the atmosphere and maybe take part in the on stage drawing parade in one of the most relaxed comic shows of the year which seems to have become a welcome fixture on the Accent UK calendar.

Our final show of the year will surprisingly be.....Thought Bubble in Leeds on the 23rd & 24th November! I say surprisingly as you may recall that we were one of the many regulars who missed out when the tables went viral and sold out on twitter in 2 hours flat in February!.

The speed of the sell out surprised everyone and didn't go down well in the normally forgiving comics community, however the organiser's came good on their word to try and find a solution and recently added a third hall close to the main venue at Leeds Royal Armouries which we booked a table at while remaining on the 'reseve list' for the main New Dock Hall -  and we've just heard from the lovely Sarah that thanks to someone dropping out that we are indeed back in the main hall - phew!

We're obviously pretty chuffed with this and you have to admire the organiser's ambition in adding floorspace to an already packed arena, and we are grateful that our unbroken attendance at the festival since the very first 'town hall' show in 2007 will now continue.

With that final thought, Dave and I are already planning ahead for 2014 which promises to be even busier than this year's record breaking 11 shows. Our 'long list' has 18 different events and dates at the moment which is crazy, we obviously can't do them all so will sadly have to 'drop' some of our existing shows to make room for some exciting new ones.

Of course we better have some new books to present at these events so watch this space!

Copenhagen Here We Come!

Well I really feel like the original 'Travelling Man' at the moment as I'm busy packing for our much anticipated trip to Copenhagen and this weekend's Copenhagen Comics festival!

The show is the revamped and re-named komiks.dk show that we've been proud to be part of since its inception in 2004 - gosh is it really that long ago - and we've attended every one since. The shows normally a bi-annual one but slipped its slot from last year so its now 3 years since our last trip there and we're getting quite excited.

Yes it really was 2004 - The original Accent DK Team, Colin, Dave & Chris say Skal!

We've had many, many special moments at these shows and have met a great bunch of folk there over the years, some of whom we see elsewhere on our travels in the UK or at MoCCA in the US, but the majority we only see in Denmark so its always good fun catching up and seeing more of the sights - providing Soren our tour guide is available!

The Rio Bravo - one of Soren's cultural recommendations in 2010!

The core of this year's committee have been involved with the show since its start and it promises to be a good one with a great mix of global guests, featuring the UK's own Charlie Adlard, Melinda Gebbie and Frazer Irving plus from the US, Brian Azzarello, Jaime Hernandez and Jill Thompson and lots more European guests- see the lists here and here!

Right, still a bit of packing to do so I'll leave you with a few fun vintage snaps - Skal!
